I’m going for an ultra marathon world record…
If you would have told me a year ago that I would have run six ultras on six continents, I wouldn’t have believed you.
I’ve never run a half marathon. Never run a marathon. Until a few months ago, never ran an ultra. Now I’m going for a world record.
You never know what you’re capable of until you place yourself to easily fail. What a better way to fail than to decide to run 50k and 64k races in some of the most difficult places in the world. I could have stopped running anytime. You tend to think about your life choices running through rice fields with 90 plus degree heat and humidity. But I kept going. I kept running. One foot in front of the other….all the way to the finish line.
What an absolutely incredible adventure ultra running has been. From running through the temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia to remote villages in Madagascar. From the summertime cold of Antarctica to the heat and humidity of Cairns, Australia. And now I’ll trade the mountains of Switzerland to the southern Andes in Patagonia for ultra number seven. Race day is September 21st.
The thing I’m most grateful for: the amazing people I’ve met and run with along this journey. Ultra running is an incredible group of people and to have met so many kind and wonderful people along the way has truly been the highlight of this experience.
So what about this record? It’s the total aggregate time for all seven continents. Add up the time for each race and the goal is to have the fastest time. Not only can I break the decade old male record, I’m striving to also be faster than the female record as well.
I want this. I want to win. I’m training, digging deep, and pushing myself always to limits I never ever dreamed of. Whether I beat the world record or not, I will have given my absolute best. I’m grateful for this journey. It’s been one hell of a ride. Let’s goooooooooooo!
